Pitt Street Bridge & Pickett Park

The Pitt Street Bridge is a must visit when in Charleston. The bridge used to connect Mount Pleasant to Sullivan's Island over the inter-coastal waterway. Once you have parked on the side of the road, there is palm-tree lined Pickett Park which you'll find filled with people and dogs. Some will be soaking in the view while walking or biking on the pathway while others will be sitting on benches. Others will be fishing and crabbing along the edge. If you keep walking, you will get to the old Pitt Street bridge which no longer connects all the way to Sullivan's Island. Here you will find even more people fishing and crabbing while others will be capturing the gorgeous views with their cameras. From here you can spot dolphins, crabs, turtles, boats, the Charleston shoreline, and of course the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge.

Morgan Creek Grill

The View:

Morgan Creek Grill is located on the Intracoastal Waterway and has a beautiful view of the docks. From your seat on the upper deck, you can watch the sun set behind the boats. You'll frequently see people getting up from their table or walking away from the bar towards the stair case to get the jaw dropping view you can see above.

The Food:

I chose to eat on the Upper Deck while there is also a Main Dining Room downstairs. The Upper Deck has a more casual bar feel. The food lives up to that description too. "Good but nothing to write home about" is a phrase often heard about the spot. The fries are heavy on the seasoning and the burgers are juicy. The pricing matches the food.

The Details:

Review: Check it out, the view is worth it!

Brittlebank Park

Brittle Bank park is a gorgeous park located in downtown Charleston on the Ashley River. There are so many breath taking views it can be hard to chose where to sit, stand, or walk. There are two piers which you can walk out on to take in the view and/or fish and crab. There are also a variety of benches along the river for a calm relaxation away from the hustle and bustle of Charleston. It is located right next to the baseball stadium so do keep that in mind because baseball games can lead to an increase in number of people present.

Shem Creek Park

Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant is home to a beautiful series of boardwalks and many delicious resaurants. Upon arrival at the creek, be sure to park in the designated parking spots for Shem Creek Park to avoid a ticket or being towed. The boardwalk begins here and heads through the marsh towards the ocean. From the boardwalk you can spot dolphins, the bridge, and gorgeous sunsets.

Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge ~ Cooper River Bridge

The Arthur Ravenel Bridge is an iconic landmark of the Lowcountry. The bridge spans the Cooper River connecting Mount Pleasant and downtown Charleston. The sunsets over downtown Charleston so the ideal view is facing away from Mount Pleasant. I prefer to park at Memorial Waterfront Park directly under the bridge and walk up from there. The pictures on this post are all taken .75 miles into the walk across the bridge and the incline makes for a great walk. There is no need to walk the whole bridge because the view does not change that much as you approach East Bay Street. From the middle you can see Castle Pinckney, USS Yorktown, dolphins, and various ships passing through.

The Details:
Address: 99 Harry M. Hallman Jr Blvd
                                                          Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464

Fort Moultrie

Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island is hands down my favorite place to catch a sunset. While the fort itself is not open at sunset, there are various places to catch the sun-setting. Option one is along the rocks with the Ravenel bridge to your right (pictured above). Another option is along the beach at Station 12 (picture on the left below). The third option is the other section of beach around the corner (pictured on the right below). Along the walk, there are various little areas where you can climb up and pick a seat on the walk. All the pictures on this blog were taken from different areas around the fort on the same day (obviously at different points in the sunset). As you can see, there are lots of amazing

The Details:

                               Address: 1214 Middle Street
                                               Sullivan's Island, SC 29482

Parking: There are two parking lots, one on either side of the fort.
Personally, I park on the fence along Poe Avenue
because I usually walk straight ahead to that section
of beach before coming around the bend towards the
bridge. The lot for Station 12 works just as well.

                              Cost: Free

Dogs: Dogs are allowed. Please visit the Sullivan's Island Website
for hours. (Don't forget to clean up after your pet!)

Daniel Island Trail

If you are from out of town and only here for a short while, I highly recommend catching sunsets somewhere other than Daniel Island. If, however, you can't get yourself off the island, the place to be is Daniel Island Trail. The trail begins at the parking lot along the Wando River. There is a short pier you can walk out on and overlook the 526 bridge. At sunset though, you should take the walk down the trail to the wooden bridge that walks across the marsh. The sun will set behind the marshes not the river. You can also count on seeing a variety of different wildlife, particularly birds.

The Details:

                                    Address: 101 River Landing Drive

Sullivan's Island Lighthouse (Station 19)

While it is far from the prettiest lighthouse, this black and white tower is a local landmark. The Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse is an active lighthouse that replaced the old Morris Island Lighthouse many years ago. During the day, the area around the lighthouse, but not inside the lighthouse itself, can be accessed from the road at Station 18 ½. However, during sunset, the place to be is the beach looking back at the lighthouse. For this reason, I recommend parking at Station 19 and making the short walk along that path to the sand.

The Details:

Address: Located between Station 18 1/2 and 19

Parking: Park along the street at Station 19 and use the beach access

Cost: Free (Just make sure all your wheels are off the pavement)

Dogs: Allowed- Check the Sullivan's Island website for hours

Alhambra Hall & Park

Located in Old Mount Pleasant, Alhambra Hall offers a private view of a gorgeous sunset. During the week, I have never shared the locale with more than one other couple. Upon arrival you will see the Main Hall which is used on occasion for weddings, receptions, or other events. To the left, you will see the open green field that stands between the Great Hall and Charleston Harbor. Personally, I find the walking paths along and into the marshes to be the most enjoyable part. Others are more keen on the benches, where one can relax and simply soak in the view. Across the street you can find a park which during the day is often full of children.
